The preservation of the Colonial Spanish
horse, or Spanish Mustang, is one of
great importance. Conservation of
this rare breed of horses and its
historical importance to Spanish, Native
American, and North American history is
profound.
Founded by the family of
Joty and Virginia Baca, the Baca
Horse Conservancy is dedicated to
its mission statement: to
preserve the Baca strain of Colonial
Spanish horse through education,
awareness, and promotion. There
are less than 3,000 Colonial Spanish
horses in existence worldwide, and the
population of New Mexico’s original
horses are diminishing quickly. The
American Livestock Breed Conservancy has
listed the Baca strain as “critical”
recognizing their fragile future. Our
vision of strengthening the current gene
pool, creating programs to raise
awareness of these historic horses, and
offering programs to secure their future
is of importance today. We ask you to
join our efforts to save the last
remnants of our past.
“New Mexico has proven to be an
interesting repository of several
interesting strains. This in part
reflects the importance of New Mexico in
the early days of the introduction of
horses into North America. The family of
Doroteo (Joty) and Virginia Baca have
been instrumental in saving a unique
strain of horses.”- Dr. Phillip
Sponenberg, DMV, PhD Professor of
Pathology and equine genetics
