Welcome to Baca Horse Conservancy
The preservation of the Colonial Spanish horse, or Spanish Mustang, is one of great importance. Conservation of this rare breed of horses and its historical importance to Spanish, Native American, and North American history is profound.
The preservation of the first horse re-introduced to our country, the "Colonial Spanish" Horse is of critical importance. The "Baca Strain", New Mexico's own hidden treasure has been preserved by the Baca family for over 60 years.
This small herd survived during a time when "Spanish Mustangs" were being eradicated and replaced with larger horses. Unwanted and undesired because if their size they were released and destroyed in great numbers. Only few old timers realized the strength and intelligence of the mighty mustang and took it upon themselves to assemble personal herds, and those families are the heroic families that saved "America's Colonial Spanish Horses".
We remain to see the beautiful and wild remnants of the horses that run free and it is a constant reminder of our freedom and the history of our country. It gives us warmth and inner spirit and a sense of patriotism each time we see them. They are the buffalo, they are the eagle, they are the horse that made colonization possible, and for them we should be forever grateful.
Sadly, as is documented with "The American Livestock Breed Conservancy", this very horse has now found itself listed as endanger of extinction. There are approximately 3,000 that remain. In the Baca Strain there are approximately 60. So our herd is listed as "Critically" endangered. Our goal is to responsibly increase our herd size to 120.
Under the direction and consultative services of Dr. Phillip Sponenberg, Equine Geneticist from Virginia Tech we work with our breeding program and steadily watch our herd and place our horses on several Baca Chica Conservation sites that we have developed in our community. We are very excited about our program and that we have the support of our wonderful community and that the Baca Horses are available to children in a positive and learning environment.
